Sarina Wiegman says she feels "a little bit strange" following England's 3-2 Nations League win against Netherlands to keep alive their Olympic qualification hopes.
Lineth Beerensteyn's brilliant performance secured a substantial lead for the visiting team, intensifying the pressure on England and jeopardising their chances of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The game took a dramatic turn in the second half, as England mounted a remarkable comeback orchestrated by the goalscoring efforts of Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp. A pivotal contribution from substitute Ella Toone further fuelled the resurgence, ultimately sealing a memorable victory for Wiegman's resilient side.
While the result means England can still qualify for the Olympic Games, they need to beat Scotland and hope Netherlands fail to win against Belgium.
Wiegman said to ITV: "I feel a little bit strange. I am really happy with the win but in the end you hope you win by two goals so you're in a better position. But, coming back from 2-0 down and how we showed up in the second half was so well done. It was a good performance. Overall it was a really good game.
"We started well and were totally dominant but they came with one counter attack and went 1-0 up. It was a good goal from there.
"We said at half-time that we weren't playing badly, but yes we'd conceded two goals and we had to do better but keep going because they are struggling too."
Even if the Netherlands beat Belgium at home, England could still go through if they defeat Scotland by a sufficiently large scoreline to take their goal difference above the Dutch.
Netherlands manager Andries Jonker said: “It’s a question all your Dutch colleagues have asked. It makes sense to ask it. I think about sports history. For many years, Great Britain has participated in the Olympics as Great Britain. It’s strange, but it’s not going to change.
“I was present in history lessons at school. There is a relationship between the British countries but they want nothing more than to beat each other. For whatever Scottish sportsperson it’s an honour to beat the English. In rugby, Scotland and England is always fight. In the women’s game, it’s going to be the same, in spite of the fact that a player like Erin Cuthbert would participate in a Great Britain team.
“When the draw was made, I said to the players the only thing we can do is keep this in our hands. Straight away, it was annoying, but it wasn’t going to change.”
